Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) represent one of the most vulnerable segments of society, particularly in Nigeria, where conflicts, environmental disasters, and economic instability have resulted in significant displacement. In Gombe Local Government, Gombe State, IDPs face a multitude of challenges, including inadequate access to basic services, lack of security, limited job opportunities, and psychological trauma. These issues are compounded by the lack of sufficient government intervention and support for their integration back into society. Print media, including newspapers, play a crucial role in raising awareness about the plight of IDPs, advocating for their rights, and providing vital information on available assistance and services. Local newspapers in Gombe have the potential to address these challenges by reporting on the struggles of IDPs, advocating for government action, and providing a platform for humanitarian organizations to share their resources. Through articles, features, and editorial pieces, print media can give a voice to the displaced, drawing public attention to their needs while also informing the general public and policymakers on the urgency of addressing IDPs' challenges. Furthermore, print media can offer valuable information on humanitarian assistance, including how to access relief services and legal aid (Ola & Nuhu, 2024). This study aims to explore how print media in Gombe contributes to addressing the challenges faced by IDPs, with a particular focus on the effectiveness of media coverage in bringing attention to their needs.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role that print media can play in highlighting the challenges of IDPs in Gombe, there remains a gap in understanding how effectively local newspapers contribute to alleviating these challenges. The problem lies in the underreporting of the unique issues faced by IDPs and the insufficient focus on their plight in mainstream media, which limits public awareness and response. Additionally, the role of print media in advocating for government policies and interventions for IDPs has not been comprehensively explored. As a result, the media’s potential to mobilize support and raise awareness is not fully realized. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the role of print media in addressing the challenges faced by IDPs in Gombe Local Government, Gombe State, with a particular focus on how print media influences public perception and policy action toward IDPs.
